What is Pareja Estable?

Many people are confused or do not really understand the difference between ¨pareja estable¨ and ¨pareja de hecho¨.

A pareja estable is when a couple has been together (continuously) for at least a year and do have a relationship analogous to a conjugal relationship but have not registered as pareja de hecho.

A pareja de hecho is when the couple registers and gets their certificate of pareja de hecho. (For more information on pareja de hecho click here)

It is important to understand that a pareja estable does not have to apply or register anywhere to be a pareja estable, the couple has to prove they are a pareja estable to the Extranjeria office.

How do I prove pareja estable?

In order to prove your pareja estable to extranjería you must be in a continuous relationship (for at least a year), the more years the better of course.

You can prove pareja estable by providing extranjería with proof of joint bank accounts, empadronamiento (prove that you and your partner live together and have been living together for at least a year), joint medical coverage/insurance, plane tickets, hotel reservations, or anything else that can prove that you and your partner are in fact a pareja estable.

How can I get my Tarjeta de Familiar Comunitario?

You will submit your documentation and if extranjería considers that you have sufficient proof that you are in fact a pareja estable, you will be given your tarjeta de familiar comunitario.

Why do people do pareja estable instead of pareja de hecho?

Some people do not want to register as pareja de hecho, do not want to sign documents or get married, so for these kind of people exists the option of pareja estable and many people prefer it.

What are the advantages of pareja estable?

The biggest advantage is that if it gets approved you will get your Tarjeta de Familiar Comunitario for 5 years and you can work without a problem.

What are the disadvantages of pareja estable?

The biggest disadvantage is that it can be harder for you to prove that you are a couple if you have not registered as pareja de hecho.

You will need to turn in more evidence and have a perfect and honest case to make sure your pareja estable is approved.
