Requirements to apply for the non-lucrative residence
- You cannot be a citizen of the European Union.
- You must not be in Spain in an irregular situation, that is, you must be in Spain legally.
- Have no criminal record in Spain and in the countries where you have lived in the last 5 years.
- Not be prohibited from entering Spain.
- Must have sufficient financial means to cover the expenses of your stay and return, and if applicable, those of your family members.
- Have public or private health insurance (from an entity authorized to operate in Spain).
- Not suffer from any of the diseases that can have public health repercussions.
What does non-lucrative temporary residence mean?
Non-lucrative temporary residence is a residence permit granted to a person to legally reside in Spain for one year. This year can subsequently be extended. It is important to remember that this residence does NOT allow the person to work. Additionally, the applicant must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial means to apply for this residence.
What is the amount of financial resources required to apply for non-lucrative residence?
- For their monthly maintenance, 400% of the IPREM (€25,817).
- For the maintenance of their family members, 100% of the IPREM (€6,454 per family member).
How to apply for non-lucrative residence?

Reminder: Copies of the documents must be provided and the originals must be brought at the time of submitting your application.
- Non-lucrative visa application form.
- Passport or travel document (this must be recognized as valid in Spain and must have a minimum validity of 1 year).
- Criminal record certificate (or equivalent document).
- Documentation proving that you have the financial means for the period of your stay.
- Documentation proving your health insurance.
- Medical certificate.
NOTE: Remember that if you provide documents from other countries, they must be correctly translated into Spanish.
What is the timeframe for receiving my resolution?
The resolution period is approximately three months. These three months are counted from the day after the date on which it was “received in the registry of the competent body for its processing.”
Now, what happens if the three months pass and I still have no response?
If the period elapses without the Administration having given a resolution, then it can be understood that the application has been denied by administrative silence.
What are the advantages of non-lucrative residence?

- The time of residence will also be computable for the application for Spanish nationality after one, two, or ten years depending on the specific case.
Limitations of non-lucrative residence
