Spanish government extends the validity time of the residency and staying permits of foreigners
The residency and work authorizations of foreign citizens that expire during the state of alarm are automatically extended for six months.
According the measures taken to safeguard the legality of foreigners in Spain: the residence and work authorizations, both short and long duration stays, UE family member residency card of foreigners in Spain are automatically extended for six months. All of them will be extended collectively and there is no need of issuing an individual resolution.
This measure is taken to prevent foreigners from being in an irregular situation once the state of alarm ceases. The automatic extension will begin the day after the expiration of the authorization, as long as its validity had expired during the state of alarm or in the ninety days prior to the date on which it started (the state of alarm was declared the 14th March).
Stays of up to 90 days and long-stay visas will automatically be extended for a period of three months, as long as you are in Spanish territory and you have not been able to return to your country.
Nonetheless, this measure excludes a part of the foreigners who are currently holding a student staying permit in the sanitary section.
Likewise, holders of a residency, residency and work authorization, E.U. family member residency card, a foreigner’s identity card with a long-term residence or investor and entrepreneur visas who are outside of Spain may enter Spanish territory with a valid travel document and your foreign identity card or expired visa.
It should be noted that the same order establishes that applications for renewals or extensions may be submitted during this period. The validity of the new authorization (the renewal) will start counting the day after the expiration day of the initial authorization.
Last but not least, absences from Spanish territory as a consequence of the impossibility of returning to Spain due to the health crisis will not be computable for the purposes of continuity of residence.

says May 22, 2020 at 6:26 pmHello, wondering if this applies to my husband…he has a student visa, which expired on March 20th, 2020. He reapplied for said visa in February 2020 but (not surprisingly) hasn’t heard back from immigration. Thank you in advance for clarifying!
