What is ¨Empadronamiento¨?
The empadronamiento process refers to registering your current address here in Spain.
With this process, you will obtain your padron or ¨volante padronal,¨which is a key document in many different procedures here in Spain.
If you have just moved to Spain or changed your address then you need to notify the town hall.
To start, you need to visit the town hall´s website and make an appointment at your nearest office.
IMPORTANT: They will most likely not see you if you show up with an appointment, so we recommend you take a few minutes and schedule it before showing up.
Once you have your appointment you need to prepare all of the documents that you need to take with you.
What are the requirements to get Empadronamiento?
1- ¨La solicitud de Empadronamiento¨
This is a form that needs to be completely filled out and signed b those who want to register at the address.
2- Vaid ID documents:
We recommend you take your passport and your residency card, if you do have one.
3- Valid documents if you are representing a minor or handicapped person.
4- Valid documents to prove you live at that address where you want to register at
There are two types of documents you could provide depending on your case.
If you are renting a place: you need to take your rental contract and also the last utility bill (electricity bill, for example).
If you are the owner of a property: you need to take the signed deed.
Frequently asked questions:
What if I do not have a NIE number?
You can go to your appointment without a NIE number, you can just take your passport and you will be fine.
Can I still register my address if my name is not on the contract?
If you want to register at a specific address and your name is not on the contract, you can ask someone that lives at that address as well (your roommate, or whoever lives with you–whose name IS on the contract), to write a letter and authorize that you register at that address and that you live there.
