Spanish nationality for minors born in Spain
Minors born in Spain
Many parents believe that if their child is born here it is Spanish automatically. This is not so. This child doesn't automatically access Spanish nationality nor residency if their parents do not request it. So, it is important that you do all the required paperwork.
There are only a few requirements in order to grant Spanish nationality to minors born in Spain, including:
- That one of the parents has legal residency in Spain.
- That the parent who has legal residency requests residency for the newborn child.
In addition, these children can apply for citizenship once they reach one year of age, but only as long as you have applied for their residency at birth.
See the section on Spanish nationality to review the conditions where children cannot access Spanish nationality at birth.
